JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Wed 10 September 2025 – Sat 13 September 2025
@ Gardyne Theatre, Dundee
Jesus Christ Superstar is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s
ground-breaking rock opera, first staged in 1971. Told almost
entirely through song, it follows the final week of Jesus’ life,
exploring events from the perspective of Judas Iscariot.
The story begins as Jesus’ popularity grows, stirring both
admiration and concern. Judas, one of his closest followers,
becomes increasingly uneasy about the direction of the
movement and the risks of confrontation with the authorities.
Meanwhile, Mary Magdalene offers Jesus comfort and support as pressure mounts around him.
The narrative follows familiar moments from the Gospels – the
entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, Jesus’ arrest, trial before
Pilate, and ultimately the crucifixion. Alongside these, the show
portrays the personal struggles of those closest to Jesus: Judas
wrestling with doubt and betrayal, Mary expressing her
devotion, and the apostles caught between faith and fear.
Driven by its iconic rock score – filled with powerful anthems,
emotional ballads, and complex ensemble numbers – Jesus Christ Superstar presents the passion story in a raw, human, and contemporary way that continues to resonate with audiences today.
