HELLO, DOLLY!
Tue 21 Mar 2006 – Sat 25 Mar 2006
@ Whitehall Theatre, Dundee
Hello, Dolly! was first produced in New York in 1964 starring Carol Channing, and later made into a film with Barbara Streisand and Walter Matthau.
Based on The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder, it tells the story of Dolly Levi (née Gallagher), a marriage broker who is finding a wife for Horace Vandergelder, a half-millionaire store owner of Yonkers, New York.
Vandergelder’s niece, Ermengarde, wants to marry the artist, Ambrose Kemper, and his chief clerk, Cornelius Hackl, wants a romantic adventure too, and everyone goes off on a train trip from Yonkers to New York City.
Cornelius is enchanted with hat shop proprietor, Irene Molloy, and Vandergelder meets the eccentric Ernestina Money. They all meet up in the expensive Harmonia Gardens restaurant in New York City where, in the usual way of musicals, misunderstandings are created and resolved, and relationships are broken and re-established.
